V Groove Bits

V Groove Bits

I do a lot of V-Carving with my CNC Signs. I use a V-Groove Bit to do this type of work.  One thing I have found is that one of the Best Bist for doing this kind of work is the Laser Point Bit from CMT.  Here is a link to the Bit I used. I got it on Amazon (Disclosure). I got this bit after I saw it recommended on one of the CNC Forums I subscribe to. It is one of the best purchases I have made for CNC.

Just before Christmas a friend asked me to make a V-Carved sign for them. Since time was of the essence, I went to my go to V Groove bit The Laser Point Bit. I have been using the same bit for over a year without any noticeable wear. I don’t know if this is unusual but I have a backup on hand for whenever this one finally bites the dust.

The tip on this V- Groove Bit is very sharp and pointed. Most V Groove bits do not actually have a pointed tip but the CMT Laser Point bit does. As a result it leaves a very clear line down the center of any V Carve cut.

When I make my V Carved signs I usually iuse  a paint masking film so that I can paint directly over the wood after carving without worrying about overspray.  I recently heard a bout a new method which does not use paint masking film. I plan to try it next week. The idea is to cut a bit deeper than normal, spray the entire board and then use a planer to take off the overspray. The advantage to that method is there is no need for masking film and the signs could possibly be made quicker.
